American Thanksgiving Food in the UK: Stuffing, Canned Pumpkin & Cranberry Sauce (2026)
Cooking an American Thanksgiving in Britain usually comes down to a handful of ingredients you can't buy in a UK supermarket. Turkey, potatoes and green beans are easy. Boxed stuffing mix, canned pumpkin, jellied cranberry sauce, French's fried onions and light corn syrup are not. This guide walks through the classic menu dish by dish and shows where each American staple fits. Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday 26 November.
The quick shopping list
- Stove Top stuffing mix (chicken is the classic; there is also cornbread)
- Libby's 100% pure pumpkin for pie
- Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce, the can-shaped one
- Campbell's cream of mushroom soup and French's crispy fried onions for green bean casserole
- Karo light corn syrup and pecan halves for pecan pie
- Jet-Puffed marshmallows for the sweet potato casserole
Everything above, plus gravy mixes, brine kits, pie crusts and cornbread mix, is in our American Thanksgiving Food collection.
The turkey
A wet or dry brine is the simplest way to stop a big bird drying out. A ready-made kit such as the Fire & Flavor apple sage brine includes the bag and seasoning, so all you add is water and a cold space for 12 to 24 hours. For gravy, American cooks often keep a packet of McCormick turkey gravy mix as back-up in case the pan juices don't stretch far enough.
Stuffing (or "dressing")
In the US, stuffing is a side dish of seasoned bread cubes rather than the sage-and-onion balls served with a British roast. Boxed Stove Top is ready in about five minutes on the hob. If you prefer to bake it in a dish, Pepperidge Farm cornbread stuffing gives you the dry toasted cubes to mix with stock, butter, celery and onion.
Green bean casserole
This is the dish most British guests ask about. Mix cooked green beans with a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup and a splash of milk, top with crispy fried onions and bake until bubbling. The French's onions are the part you won't find locally; the larger 24oz tub also works on salads and burgers once the holiday is over.
Sweet potato casserole
Mashed sweet potato with butter, brown sugar and warm spice, baked under a layer of marshmallows until they turn golden. UK marshmallows tend to be pink-and-white and gelatine-heavy; American-style Jet-Puffed melt and brown more evenly.
Pumpkin pie
British supermarkets rarely stock plain canned pumpkin, and roasting a fresh carving pumpkin gives a watery filling. Libby's is the brand most American recipes are written around, including the recipe printed on the can. Add pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves) and, if you'd rather skip pastry, a Keebler Ready Crust shell. Baking for a crowd? There is a bulk 6 lb 10 oz can.
Pecan pie
Classic pecan pie needs light corn syrup, which gives the set, glossy filling. Golden syrup is the usual British substitute, but it is darker and has a stronger caramel flavour. Karo light corn syrup is the version American recipes assume.
Cranberry sauce and cornbread
Many American families serve the jellied cranberry sauce straight from the can, sliced into rounds with the ridges still showing. If you prefer texture, choose whole berry. For cornbread, a mix such as Krusteaz honey cornbread only needs an egg, milk and oil.
Planning ahead
Delivery is free and tracked across the UK. Order early in November so everything arrives with time to spare, and check the "best before" date on cans if you're stocking up for Christmas as well.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy canned pumpkin in the UK?
It's occasionally in large supermarkets in autumn, but supply is patchy. We stock Libby's 100% pure pumpkin in 15oz cans and a bulk catering can.
What can I use instead of light corn syrup?
Golden syrup works in a pinch but changes the flavour and colour. For an American-style pecan pie, use Karo light corn syrup.
When is Thanksgiving 2026?
Thursday 26 November 2026. It always falls on the fourth Thursday of November.
